Alumni Profile: Mikayla Pevac
Mikayla Pevac graduated with an MA in Media & Public Communication in 2019.
What is your current position and what do you love about it?
I am currently finishing my last year in the Mass Communications doctoral program at Pennsylvania State University. My dissertation is based on interviews with representatives from sexual violence prevention organizations on how they use intersectionality to guide their creation of social media content. Looking towards next Fall, I hope to start in an assistant professor position with a digital media studies emphasis.
How did your Master's degree and the networks you developed as a student prepare you for what you are doing now?
My Master’s in Media and Public Communication prepared me to enter a doctoral program with knowledge of the practical applications of media—knowledge that I integrate into my own courses now. Working with the professors also helped me hone my interest into the intersection between media studies and gender issues.
What was your favorite thing about your graduate experience at the University of Denver?
My favorite aspect of my graduate experience at DU was working with esteemed professors who had real life experiences with the subjects we were studying.
What advice do you have for prospective students who are thinking about getting a Master's degree in Media & Public Communication at DU?
My advice to prospective students is to take advantage of the personalization aspects of the program. If you want to go into the industry, be sure to do an internship. Or, if you want to continue with more school, choose to complete a thesis project. The program should be crafted to best benefit you.
